I just got a new mechanical ergonomic keyboard and it’s kinda breaking my brain. I knew it was going to be a thing to get use to (the maker even includes helpful training), but wow, I probably need to dedicate a day to just customizing & re-learning how to type
One interesting one, for instance, is apparently I hit the Y and B keys with the wrong hands. I’ve got an extra space to add Y to the left half, but need to double up the N key on the right half to type B.
I’m excited for it all eventually working, though, because it looks like I’ll be able to seamlessly swap between macOS and ChromeOS layouts without changing my keyboard muscle memory.
Ok! Day 2. After a bunch of customization iterations I’m up to about 17 WPM touch typing on the new keyboard. B and Y seem especially tricky for me for some reason; they’re both on the “wrong” keyboard
Ok. Day 3. Something interesting I’m noticing is, with the ability to remap all of my keys, I’m finding emergent patterns in my muscle memory and key usage that’s causing lots of mapping iterations. I’m up to about 25 unique attempts so far.
Day 4: I’m up to 30 WMP with 96% accuracy. Only 8 tweaks to my layout today. Getting there. Still can’t reliably type b, v, c, or x on my first try.
